Shedding Light on Lupus: Uniting for Understanding and Hope on World Lupus Day

The World Lupus Federation (WLF) launched World Lupus Day on May 10 to bring together lupus groups from around the world during Lupus Awareness Month and draw attention to the disease’s impact on the more than 5 million individuals affected worldwide. This year, on May 10, the World Lupus Federation is inviting the global public, especially those living with lupus, their friends, and family members, to raise awareness and share information about the disease on social media and in their communities.

Chronic autoimmune diseases like lupus can cause discomfort and inflammation in any area of the body, including the joints, skin, blood, kidneys, heart, and lungs. The immune system, which typically fights infections, targets healthy tissue when someone has lupus. Although anyone can get lupus, women make up 90% of those who suffer from the condition. It can be debilitating and even deadly, and there is no recognized cause or treatment.

For lupus sufferers worldwide, getting access to treatment and drugs remains a major obstacle. According to a recent WLF global study, wait times (44%), weariness (22%), and expense (22%), among other factors, were the main reasons why 1 in 4 respondents postponed or did not receive necessary medical care in the previous 12 months. In addition, those who postponed or refused medical attention had twice the chance of experiencing repeated flare-ups, which are exacerbations of lupus symptoms like pain and inflammation.

Professor Syed Atiqul Haq, President of the Lupus Foundation of Bangladesh and a member of the eight-nation WLF steering group, stated that “World Lupus Day is an incredibly important opportunity to raise awareness of the physical, emotional, and economic impact that lupus can have.” “Lupus is not well understood by many people in Bangladesh and throughout the world, which can cause a delay in diagnosis, make those who have the illness feel misunderstood, and prevent them from getting the treatment they require for this crippling condition. Every voice disseminating information on World Lupus Day has the potential to make a huge difference and increase funding and awareness for the fight against lupus.

Conclusion

As World Lupus Day draws to a close, let us carry forward the spirit of awareness, support, and hope that this day embodies. Together, we can make a difference in the lives of millions affected by lupus, fostering a world where every individual has the resources, understanding, and support they need to thrive despite the challenges of this complex disease. Thank you for joining us on this journey of education, solidarity, and compassion.

Moreover, initiatives like World Lupus Day serve as powerful platforms for raising awareness, fostering collaboration, and driving positive change. By uniting individuals, organizations, and communities around the globe, we can amplify our collective voice and advocate for greater support, research funding, and access to care for all those affected by lupus.
