History of National Sports Day
Many people feel Major Dhyan Chand, a field hockey player, is the greatest player of all time. Dhyan Chand was born on August 29, 1905, in Allahabad, India, into a Kushwaha Rajput family. He was the son of Rameshwar Singh and Sharadha. Dhyan Chand has two brothers, Mool Singh and Roop Singh. The latter, also a hockey player, represented India in field hockey, winning gold medals in the 1932 and 1936 Olympics. Chand’s father served in the British Indian Army, where he played hockey. Chand was known for his outstanding ball-handling and goal-scoring abilities. Beyond these successes, his influence can be seen in the eight Olympics held between 1928 and 1964, during which India won the field hockey championship seven times.
According to his memory, Chand played internationally from 1926 to 1949, netting 570 goals in 185 matches both at home and abroad. The Indian government awarded him the Padma Bhushan, India’s third-highest civilian award, in 1956, the same year he retired from the army as a major.
To commemorate his birthday, India instituted National Sports Day in 2012. The celebration’s goals are to honour the sports hero and enhance public awareness of the importance of sports in everyday life, with a focus on physical fitness and well-being. On this day, renowned sports figures receive significant accolades from the President of India, including the Khel Ratna, Arjuna, Dronacharya, and Dhyan Chand prizes.
