Happy Teachers’ Day

People around the globe hold educators in the highest esteem. In India, the concept of a Guru-Shishya relationship has deep roots; in fact, followers often hold their Guru in higher esteem than even their parents or God. India celebrates Teachers’ Day on September 5th to commemorate the birth anniversary of our country’s second president, Dr. Sarveapalli Radhakrishnan (1962–67). Renowned academician  Dr.S. Radha Krishnan was well-liked by his students because of his approachable teaching style. The world celebrates World Teacher’s Day annually on October 5th to mark the passing of the ILO/UNESCO Recommendation on the Status of Teachers in 1966. Commemorating educators and those who work in the field. This year’s World Teachers’ Day organizers have announced their plans for the subject “Young Teachers: The Future of the Profession.”

Teachers play a crucial role in shaping our culture. They construct nations. You can’t put a price on the influence they have on their students. Teachers have a profound impact on their students’ lives and identities from the time they enter the classroom in kindergarten all the way through college and beyond. It is impossible to overstate the value of an excellent educator. In a teacher-student connection, the instructor provides freely without expecting anything in return, making it the most altruistic relationship imaginable. Outside of the home, they are like parents in that they lead, mentor, inspire, and encourage others while also setting a positive example. Without expecting anything in return, teachers generously impart their wisdom and experience to their students, celebrate their triumphs with pride, and relentlessly push their charges to reach their full potential.

We celebrate Teachers’ Day every year because we greatly appreciate the work that teachers do to educate and strengthen their communities. However, I find myself nostalgically thinking about the ways in which these festivities have evolved through the years. Back when I was a schoolgirl in the ’70s and ’80s, I’ll never forget gathering flowers to construct a bouquet for my classroom teacher. I would then nervously stand in line to present it to her. Once upon a time, in middle school, instead of flowers, students would confidently lay greeting cards on teachers’ tables, write down their sincere gratitude, and wait for a response. Professors would pore over our writings, looking for errors as small as a pencil stroke. Despite the odd rejection due to grammar errors, their comments were mostly supportive. Teachers’ Day was a lot of fun when I was in high school. While they enjoyed a day off in the staffroom, we would dress up as instructors and teach junior classes. Things were different in college when we could choose our own professors. All were knowledgeable and open to questions and comments, though some were more reserved. Their lectures, observations, and modelling helped us learn. Regardless of the directness of our questions to the course material or their complete relatedness, they consistently provided answers and imparted invaluable wisdom.

Modern methods of wishing teachers a wonderful teacher’s day include social media platforms like Facebook, WhatsApp, and email. In today’s world, personal connections are becoming increasingly rare in all types of relationships, including those between teachers and their students. Additionally, information sources have evolved. Books and knowledgeable educators used to be our go-to sources. Until our lecturers generously and willingly answered our questions and pointed us in the direction of relevant sources, we had no one to turn to for help. Students nowadays choose online tutorials and video courses. We used to spend a lot of time in the library reading and studying, but now we can get any piece of information we need in a matter of seconds using Google. However, there is no way to verify the veracity of data obtained online. In the end, seeking confirmation and affirmation from a teacher is the way to go. It follows that educators are indispensable now, tomorrow, and forevermore.
